Wendy Cook Biography

Who is Wendy Cook?

The principal of an elementary school in South Carolina was found shot dead in a car, authorities said, and the suspect who was also in the car at the time has been taken into custody.

Dillon County Sheriff Douglas Pernell said Wendy Cook, 54, was shot and killed early Sunday. Coroner Donnie Grimsley ruled her death a homicide on Monday, WBTW-TV reported.

arrested and charged

Authorities arrested Kyle Church, 31, about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, who was called to an address outside Dillon to investigate the shooting, Pennell said. When police arrived, they found Cook and Church in the car, and Cook was dead, Penel said. Agents also recovered a gun, he said.

Church is being held at the Dillon County Detention Center on charges of murder and possession of a weapon while committing a violent crime. It is unclear whether he has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf.

Cook is the principal of Stewart Heights Elementary School in Dillon County School District 4. District 4 Superintendent Ray Rogers told the media she has been with the district for nearly 25 years.

die

State Education Director Molly Spearman said in a statement Monday that she was “sad” by Cook’s death.

“His colleagues and friends in Dillon County School District 4 talk about the great work he does in running the school and the many impacts he has had on students and staff,” Spearman said. “As they mourn this loss, I extend my deepest condolences to the entire Dillon School community.”

Cook is survived by a daughter, a son and a grandson, according to an online obituary. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday.

Pennell said Tuesday that Cook and Church were acquaintances, but the motive for the murders had not been disclosed. He also said he did not know if Church was one of Cook’s former students.

WBTW-TV, citing court records, reported that Church was named in an ongoing wrongful-death lawsuit. According to authorities, Teddy Yarborough died after a collision with an ATV in June 2020. The lawsuit alleges that Church was driving the ATV while Yarborough was a passenger and that the ATV was hit after Church failed to give way.
