Who is Rodney Jackson?

The Pensacola community was rocked Tuesday morning by the death of Rodney Jackson, director of business engagement at the Studer Community Institute, when it was determined he had died from a bacterial infection from eating raw oysters.

But experts say Vibrio is easier to catch than you think if you don’t take precautions.

Dr. Robert “Wes” Farr, a professor at the University of West Florida who specializes in areas such as infectious diseases, said Vibrio infections are becoming more common during the warmer months. There are different varieties of Vibrio, but Farr said the most common tends to be Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a common source of foodborne illness from eating raw fish and oysters.

“Serious infections are rare, but the risk remains,” he said.

Jackson bought the oysters on August 3 at Maria’s Fresh Seafood Market.

It wasn’t until the weekend that his seemingly mild symptoms began to worsen and alarmed his wife Patricia.

According to Gillette, at the suggestion of his wife, he considered a West Florida hospital check, but decided to give up after seeing the wait time.

According to Gillette, when he started having trouble breathing on Sunday, he was taken to the Ascension Sacred Heart intensive care unit, where Vibrio bacteria was later detected in Jackson’s blood and determined to be the cause of his death.

The state requires seafood suppliers like Maria’s to go through strict procedures to ensure oysters are kept at a safe temperature and to post signs indicating that customers eat raw oysters “at their own risk.”
