Who is Justin Damond Rushczyk?
Mohamed Noor, a former Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed Mohamed Noor in 2017 after an unarmed Australian woman called 911 to report a disturbance outside her home, was released Monday morning.
Noor, 36, shot and killed Justine Ruszczyk Damond on July 15, 2017, when she called 911 to report what she believed to be a woman who had been sexually assaulted outside her home. Damond walked over to his police car after seeing Noor and his partner arrive. He told the jury he mistakenly viewed her as a threat, so he fired.
Mohamed Noor was released Monday morning five years after he shot Justine Damond after calling 911.
He was originally convicted of murder and manslaughter and sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison, however, the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the murder conviction last October.
As a result, Noor was sentenced to five years in prison and released on Monday, with the rest on parole.
The Minnesota Department of Corrections kept his incarceration location secret, saying he was at risk of harm.
For his own safety, he was transferred from a Minnesota prison to a North Dakota facility in 2019.
Damond’s family in Australia had previously condemned the overturning of Noor’s murder conviction.
Last week, his father, who was looking forward to his release from prison on Monday, told The Associated Press in a statement: “His release after a paltry verdict demonstrates the sympathy for the jury representing the Minneapolis community. Willingness and his desire to make a statement.” on community expectations of police conduct and actions.
Diamond holds dual Australian and American citizenship.
On July 15, she was home alone when she heard voices outside the house.
“I could hear someone in the back and I’m not sure if she was having sex or was raped,” she told the operator.
