Arthur Haynes Biography

Who is Arthur Haynes?

A man has been arrested for the unsolved murder of a teenager in a house fire more than two decades ago, in a unsolved breakthrough.

Homicide detectives arrested a 55-year-old man in Queensland on Wednesday in connection with the April 9, 1998 murder of Redfern teenager Arthur Haines.

Haynes, 13, was staying at a friend’s house in Waterloo, Sydney, when a fire ripped through the house at about 10.30pm.

The fire was started by a Molotov cocktail thrown at the building; however, the case has plagued detectives for decades before the investigation reopened in 2020.

Arthur was sleeping in a room on the top floor of the house on Walker Street when the house caught fire.

He had to escape the fire with burns to 60% of his body and died at Westmead Children’s Hospital about 11 weeks later.

Six other people in the house escaped the building unharmed.

Homicide squad detectives recently received a warrant for the 55-year-old man’s arrest after a lengthy investigation and public requests for information.

The man was arrested at a Brisbane home by Queensland Police Homicide Squad detectives about 11am on Wednesday.

NSW Police detectives have since travelled to Queensland where they will seek the man’s extradition to NSW at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.
