Who is Zaniar Matapur?

The terror suspect accused of killing two and injuring 21 more at a gay bar in Oslo last night has been identified as a 42-year-old former plumber, born in Iran.

Born in Iranian Kurdistan, Zaniar Matapour arrived in Bergen, Norway, as a refugee at the age of 12.

He was this morning charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder and terrorism following a homophobic attack in the heart of London’s LGBT+ pub.

Norway’s Police Security Service (PST) investigated Matapur a month ago but deemed him “not an imminent threat,” according to Norwegian state broadcaster VG.

Roger Berg, the head of the PST, said at a press conference this afternoon: “In May, the PST [alleged] The perpetrator because he showed interest in speeches deemed to be contrary to Islam.

not considered in these conversations [alleged] The perpetrator had any violent intent.

The security services have upgraded the terror threat from level 3 to “normal”. At level 5 of ‘Extraordinary’.

The PST said the level 5 warning did not imply any special requirements from the public beyond additional “vigilance” and a “low threshold for contacting police”.

Videos shared on social media showed hundreds of “Pride” protesters gathering in Oslo, apparently spurred by an alleged hate crime last night.

Matapour, a high school dropout with long-standing mental health issues, was sentenced to 10 months in prison as a teenager after being linked to a stabbing at his high school prom.

He was acquitted by an appeals court, according to court documents reviewed by Norwegian media NettaVisen.

Matapour’s involvement in serious crime did not end there, with an Oslo terror suspect charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm in 2019.

He was released again after a court appeal.

The suspected victim of last night’s attack in Matapur has not been identified.

The website added that Matapur’s first mental health diagnosis was made in the 1990s, and he listed conditions including paranoid schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder and “delusions”.

His lawyer, prominent Norwegian Johan Christian Erden, insisted investigators take into account the suspect’s mental health.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gal Stoll said this afternoon: “I know that many Muslims are scared and hopeless. So it is our responsibility that no one else is responsible but those behind the attack.

“There is no question that we are a community and we are a diverse community.”

Another location in the attack at around 1.15am today was the Herr Nilsen Jazz Club next door, where revellers said they were hit by shards of flying glass.

she says : “A woman pulled me down and told me I had to play dead.”

The man then shot directly at the table behind her. She escaped from a London pub unscathed.

Police lawyer Christian Hartlow said: “Our overall assessment is that there is reason to believe he wanted to cause serious fear among the population.

Oslo Police confirmed last night: “Two people have been confirmed dead in the shooting. Several people were seriously injured.

“Witnesses said people fled the scene in panic,” Norway’s state newspaper VG reported.

Oslo University Hospital said it had been placed on red alert following the shooting.

Olav Roenneberg, a reporter for Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, said he witnessed the shooting.
