Matthew West made his first video appearance on Thursday morning. He was wearing a neck brace after attacking two Forsyth County jails.
He was charged with two counts of assaulting a detention facility employee causing grievous harm and an inmate with a weapon. All three charges are Class F felonies, each with a minimum of 59 months.
According to West’s records, he used a makeshift knife in the attack from a box owned by the detention center. His records also mention that he was part of a gang and had a history of assault.
West was charged with assaulting two Forsyth County detainees last Friday. One of the officers suffered an eye injury and the other had a dislocated shoulder, the sheriff’s office said. Both officers had bruises on their bodies.
West will be represented by a court-appointed public defender at his next court appearance on Sept. 8.
