In 2021, Elena Semechin wins gold at the Paralympic Games. It was the most successful year of the visually impaired German swimmer’s career. But then she received a diagnosis that threw her life into chaos. However, Cancer didn’t stop the 28-year-old German swimmer. Instead, it reminded her that life was short and that she couldn’t wait for things to get better. This tells her that she needs to work and pursue her dreams when she can, and train for a champion while undergoing chemotherapy.
There is no doubt that Elena’s love of swimming became a driving factor in her battle with cancer. Elena was born on October 26, 1993 in Kazakhstan and moved to Russia with her family. When the swimmer was 7 years old, she was diagnosed with macular degeneration. This resulted in her having 3% vision. The girl went to a school for disabled children in Russia. Later, when she was 11 years old, she moved to Germany.
Elena discovered a passion for swimming, and despite her disability, she trained to be a Paralympic swimmer. This swimmer is good at freestyle and breaststroke. Elena Semechin won silver in the 100m breaststroke in 2012. Elena’s silver medal event took place at the London Paralympics. Later, in 2016, she finished fifth in the same event. Hopeful and dedicated swimmers have always dreamed of winning gold medals.

Well, her dream came true at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when she beat British contender Rebecca Redfern for first place. Amid all this happiness, Elena was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2021. Let’s add that when the swimmer learned that she had been diagnosed with cancer, she was planning to marry her boyfriend and coach Philippe Semechin. However, the German swimmer did not lose hope and continued to compete in the German Championships. Just after she finished one cycle of chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, Elena came last, but that didn’t affect her mentality, but instead awakened her competitive spirit. Currently, she is undergoing chemotherapy and is preparing for the World Championships in Portugal. After that, she will aim to win gold again at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
