Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder who followed another restaurant customer outside before brutally beating him, breaking his skull, in a wordless attack.

Bui Van Phu, 55, a registered sex offender in the Bronx, was arrested in connection with the unprovoked assault on Friday, Aug. 12.

New York police confirmed they arrested Phu after posting images of the horrific incident.

Police were called at 10:45 p.m. to a report that a 52-year-old man was assaulted outside the Fuego Tipico restaurant at 163 East 188th Street in the Bronx.

The victim was found unresponsive and unconscious on the ground and taken to hospital after suffering head injuries in an unprovoked attack.

Horrific surveillance video captured the moment the man donned gloves and hit the victim hard on the back of the head.

He then immediately fell to the ground, apparently unconscious, banging his head on the concrete after the surprise attack.

The man, wearing a black T-shirt and black pants, left the restaurant shortly after the victim, who was chatting with other people.

The victim suffered a fractured skull, a fractured cheekbone, and a brain hemorrhage, and emergency medical services took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.

He is currently in a critical but stable condition and an investigation into the brutal attack is ongoing.

Phu was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse in March 1995.

A spokesman for the Fuego Típico restaurant declined to comment when contacted by DailyMail.com.

An NYPD spokesperson said: “Police have been informed that on Friday, August 12, 2022 at approximately 10:45 p.m., police received a 911 call that a man was shot outside the Fuego Tipico restaurant at 163 Eat 188 St. to the attack.

“On arrival, responders found a 52-year-old male victim unresponsive and unconscious on the ground with head trauma.

The NYPD said the man “did not have any prior conversation or argument” and punched the victim in the face before “returning to the restaurant and then back into the unknown.”

Police are still appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

“After further investigation, the victim walked out of the restaurant, stopped and saw several people talking, at which point a person walked out of the restaurant wearing gloves and stood behind the victim.

“Without any prior conversation or argument, the person slapped the victim in the face before returning to the restaurant and then went to an unknown location.

The victim suffered a fractured skull, a fractured cheekbone, and a brain hemorrhage.

EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in critical but stable condition and an investigation is ongoing.

Instance is described as: adult male, medium build, medium build, and partially bald.

He was last seen wearing black pants, a black shirt and gloves.
