Who is Benjamin Planck?

An Oklahoma sheriff broke down in tears as he spoke about the loss of a deputy who was shot and killed when he was served an eviction notice.

Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommy Johnson was emotional Monday as he told reporters about his fallen officer, Sgt. Bobby Swartz, the county’s first officer to be shot dead since 1935.

Swartz has been in law enforcement since 1997 and previously served in the Army Reserve. He also won in 2020 for rescuing a man who was hit by a truck while off duty, and was recently promoted to sergeant in March.

“The police are a tight-knit community, and I’m so thankful for them to yell for my kids,” Johnson said, sobbing off-camera.

Swartz and another unidentified officer were shot and killed by the suspected gunman, Benjamin Plank, on Monday when he was served eviction notices.

Although the Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD), which is investigating the incident, has not officially released Plank’s name, law enforcement sources told the Daily Mail on Tuesday that his identity is “arguably fair”.

Swartz and two other officers arrived at their residence on Southwest 78th Street around 1:15 p.m. Monday after a family member filed a victim protection order against Planck last month, according to KFOR.

The unidentified landlord reportedly tried to evict Plank for $1,500 in rent arrears, and a judge issued an eviction order this week.

Officers approached Plank at the front door, then walked to the back door, where he reportedly opened fire. It is unclear why they moved to the back of the house.

“They went around the back door and the shooting started,” Johnson said at a news conference. ‘[The suspect] Shot and killed the first officer. The second officer tried to remove the officer from the shooting, who was also hit.

At least one officer returned fire, according to OKCPD Capt. Valerie Littlejohn.

After wounding the officer, Planck reportedly left in a van towing a boat and led police in pursuit of Tinker Air Force Base, where he surrendered.

The suspect allegedly fired at police while driving on I-35 before surrendering. No other police officers were injured.

It is unclear why he drove to the air base. He was seen pulling a shirtless board in the back of an unmarked police car by a group of officers in protective vests.

According to KFOR, Plank was taken to the Oklahoma County Detention Center on suspicion of first-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and fire with a vehicle.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that it will leave a patrol car at 2101 NE 36th Street for anyone who wishes to leave a message for the fallen sergeant.

“We understand the community is sharing our losses, and we appreciate your prayers and kind words,” the office wrote.

Gov. Kevin Stitt also wrote that he had spoken to Johnson and offered his condolences to police.

“Our prayers are with the family of the fallen lieutenant and the lieutenant who continues to fight for his life,” he tweeted. “I thank @OHPDPS & @OKCPD for taking swift action to prevent further loss of life.” Today and every day, Oklahoma stands with our law enforcement community.

Tinker Air Force Base also wrote a statement, writing: “Our condolences and prayers go out to the members of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department and the families of the officers killed and injured today.”

Several other local law enforcement officials also offered their condolences to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
