Who is Austin Amos?

Over the weekend, the NYPD released a horrific beating video of a New York City taxi driver being beaten to death as they apprehended two people in a senseless crime.

The two suspects turned themselves in at the 101st Precinct in Queens on Wednesday night, Fernando Mateo, a spokesman for the New York City Taxi Drivers Federation, told The Washington Post earlier Thursday.

Austin Amos, 20, and four other passengers allegedly attacked Kutin Gyimah, 52, after they attempted to rob a taxi driver in Rockaways around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Video released Wednesday showed police saying Amos was last wearing clothes that matched the man who delivered the final blow to Gyimah, sending him to the sidewalk outside Arverne Playground.

It is unclear if Amos was one of the two who surrendered to police.

Giymah, a married father of four from the Bronx, hit his head in the street and couldn’t be rescued.

Giymah chased the group down the street after fleeing from the back seat of his taxi at Beach 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard. He caught up with them and stopped one, but another came back and attacked him, the source said.

Footage of the attack showed the suspect punching Gemma multiple times and kicking him as he collapsed on the pavement. When four of the five started walking away, one of the group walked up to Gyimah and put him in high shoes.

Gyimah tried to hold up his hand to block the attacker’s shield, but was thrown onto the pavement, hit his head and limped. The suspect walked away, leaving the taxi driver motionless.

He was pronounced dead at St John’s Hospital while a group of would-be thieves escaped.

New York police identified 20-year-old Austin Amos as one of Kutin Gyimah’s attackers.

The New York State Taxi Drivers Association is offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

GoFundMe

Raised over $107,000 for a GoFundMe for Gyimah’s widow and his four children, ages 3, 5, 7 and 8.

Her widow said her husband was a hard worker who never stopped working during the pandemic.

“He’s a good guy,” Abigail Barva said. “He’s my backbone.”
