Who is Andrew Gillum?

2018 Florida gubernatorial Democratic nominee and longtime adviser Andrew Gillum was indicted Wednesday in federal court on fraud charges.

Following a grand jury indictment on 21 charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida announced charges against Gillum and Sharon Letterman-Hicks, longtime Gillum adviser and executive director of the National Black Justice League.

The indictment alleges that between 2016 and 2019, Gillum and Letterman-Hicks illegally solicited funds under false pretenses. It also alleges that the couple used a third party to transfer some of those funds to a company owned by Letterman-Hicks, which then wired the funds to Gillum for his personal use.

Gillum and Letterman-Hicks both face 19 counts of wire fraud. Gillum also faces charges of making false statements to the FBI.

Gillum and Letterman-Hicks will make their first appearance in federal court in Tallahassee Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement, former Tallahassee Mayor Gillum denied any wrongdoing and said the case against him was politically motivated.

“I spent the last 20 years of my life in public service and I continued to fight for the people,” Gillum said. “Every campaign I’ve run has been done with integrity. Make no mistake, this case is not legal, it’s political.”

“Throughout my career, I’ve stood up for the people of Florida and told the truth to power. I’ve had a goal on my back since I was mayor of Tallahassee. So they found nothing and I Full confidence that my legal team will now prove my innocence.”

“The government was wrong today. The evidence in this case is clear and will show Mr. Gillum innocent of all charges. We hope this case will be put to rest and Andrew and his family will be freed once and for all,” noted David Oscar, a prominent Democratic attorney and criminal defense attorney David Oscar Markus and Marc Elias said.

The fraud allegations mark the latest blow to Gillum’s reputation. Gillum, once seen as a rising Democratic star in Florida, has faced controversy since he lost the 2018 gubernatorial race to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

He was essentially retired from public life in 2020 when he was found in a Miami Beach hotel room with a fellow male who was undergoing treatment for an apparent drug overdose. Guillam said he was abusing alcohol at the time to deal with his loss to DeSantis and put himself in rehab.

Gillum also faces a years-long FBI corruption probe that stems from his tenure as mayor of Tallahassee. Although he faced no criminal charges, he eventually agreed to pay a $5,000 fine.
