According to Balaghat Superintendent Sameer Saurabh, the badly burned remains of two bodies were found at the site under the jurisdiction of the Ranji Police Station. He said the burnt body, believed to be that of pilot Mohit Thakur, was found near the accident site, about 40 kilometers from the Balaghat district office.
The charred body was that of pilot Mohit Thakur, around 25 years old. The female trainee co-pilot, Vrikshanka Maheshwari, is about 20 years old and is from Gujarat. Nothing else is known about the two.
“At 3:45 p.m., information received” (on crash). Security forces were called in because the area is part of a strip full of Naxalites. As the area was cordoned off, more personnel arrived on the scene. The badly burned remains of the flight instructor and female pilot have been recovered. The area is under the jurisdiction of the Ranji Police Station,” Saurabh continued.
Statement from DIG
Police Deputy Commissioner Anurag Sharma told PTI that the trainer plane took off from the Birsi airstrip in Gondia district bordering Balaghat at 3:06 pm. At 3:11pm, it lost contact with air traffic control (ATC). He said the female trainee pilot Vrikshanka Maheshwari, about 20 years old, was missing. “It is widely believed that the charred body is that of pilot Mohit Thakur,” he claimed.
What was the reason behind the accident?
The training aircraft is the property of IGRAU (Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi). It crashed into a hill near the village of Bhukkutola in Balaghat district at around 3.30pm, killing a flight training captain and a female cadet, IGRAU administrative officer Satya Kumar told Gondia’s PTI.
At 3:00 p.m., the training plane driven by the flight instructor Captain Mohit took off from Bilsi Airport for normal sorties. It reportedly crashed on a hill near the village of Bhukkutola due to bad weather.
“The bodies of Captain Mohit and the cadet pilot were badly burned in the fire on the plane. A fire brigade, a rescue team from Bilsi and other concerned officials rushed to the scene after receiving information,” he continued. According to Kumar, villagers were the first to arrive at the scene, and they found the wreckage on the hill.
