If you didn’t know the name Mackenzie ‘Mackie’ McDonald before today, you definitely will now. The American shocked the tennis world on Wednesday (January 18) after beating defending champion Rafael Nadal at the 2023 Australian Open.
Nadal, who won the tournament last year, has struggled with a hip injury throughout and McDonald was able to take advantage of it, beating the Spaniard 6-4 6-4 7-5 in straight sets.

It was easily the biggest win of McDonald’s career, as he beat compatriot Brandon Nakajima in five sets in a first-round match in Melbourne this week.
MacDonald is no stranger to distraught, though. The 27-year-old, who won the 2016 NCAA Division I tennis championship, defeated Juan Martin del Potro at the 2019 Delray Beach Open — his first career top-10 finish champion.
However, a hamstring injury kept him out for the remainder of the 2019 season and has struggled for form since his return in 2020. A year later, he recovered and reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, where he lost to Daniel Medvedev.
At the 2021 Citi Open, MacKenzie defeated defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the first round and then defeated 2015 champion Kei Nishikori in the semifinals to reach his first ATP final. He lost to Jannik Sinner in the final.
In 2022, he started playing and broke into the top 50 in the world for the first time.
