Mumbai, March 18 – Australia’s fast bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis believes seeing Mitchell Marsh waltz down for 81 in the first ODI leads to the visitors The depth of the batting lineup may have been carried away by five wickets in the first ODI against India.
Australia cruised at 129/2 at Wankhede Stadium on Friday thanks to Marsh’s 81 off 65 balls in the eighth-ranked batting line-up, including 10 fours and five sixes .
But a collapse of 8/59, sparked by the fast bowling duo of Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj, saw Australia tied for 188 in 36 overs, providing sustained help to the seamers.
“At some point, we can get carried away watching Mitch hit the ball and how well he hits it and how badly he hits it, and then think maybe the score needs to be higher than necessary.
There is a little in the ticket gate. We need to improve our technique and figure out how we’re going to play it. I think the way KL hits the ball and the blueprint looks right,” Stoinis was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
Chasing 189, India were at a shaky 83/5 for 19.2 overs as left-arm pacer Mitchell Stark took three wickets in a fine seam bowling Door.
But wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul hit an unbeaten 75 and added Ravindra Jadeja’s 45 not out as he took part in a streak of 108 runs as India’s sixth wicket crossed the finish line and was in a wicket Leading the match series 1-0.
Stoinis conceded Australia had never adapted to ground conditions, something India did through Rahul and Jadja.
“We haven’t summed up the conditions well enough and we haven’t scored enough. We’re trying a couple of different combinations, playing eight batsmen,” he said.
“We understand that if we’re going to play eight batters, we still need to somehow get to the 35th inning or whatever, and then we can use our support to assert some authority when the time comes – end power-hitting golfers,” he added.
The second ODI of the three-match series between India and Australia will be played at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
