Voter apathy cripples polls in Cross River, –

Godwin O’Donnell

As polls for the governor and the state House of Representatives get underway, there is overwhelming voter apathy at polling places across Cross River State.

Several polling stations visited in Ikom, the city of Calabar and several other places showed very low voter turnout compared to the period of the 25 February presidential and national assembly elections.

It’s not clear why voters didn’t come out en masse, but our correspondents who were monitoring the exercise reported that the INEC ad hoc staff hoped voters would still come out.

However, polling stations in Calabar City, Akpabuyo, Ikom and Akamkpa were sparsely populated even at 12.25pm, leaving polling officials and other INEC staff idle.

A number of INEC polling officers Miss Ugonma and Mr Promise Onuora have expressed their thoughts that voters will still come out.

“While we didn’t come out early, we hope they come out and let’s see, it’s been a long time.”
