The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that Malam Umar Namadi of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has won the Jigawa Governorate election.

Announcing the results in Dutse on Sunday, the poll’s returning director, Professor Umar Zaiyan of Federal University Birnin Kebbi, said Namadi received 618,449 votes, beating his closest rival, Mr Mustapha Sule Lamido, who received 368,726 votes.

Of the 1.05 million votes cast in the March 18 election, Namadi received 1.03 million valid votes, while Malam Aminu Lingim of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) received 37,156 votes.

However, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier called electoral officials to declare part of the election inconclusive. Still, their surrogates have declined to endorse the results table, which contains scores for every candidate in the gubernatorial race.

Namadi, a 60-year-old politician and chartered accountant, met the requirements of the law and was declared the winner of Jigawa’s gubernatorial election, according to Zaiyan.

The result marks a major victory for the APC and clearly empowers Namadi to lead the state.
