The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) said all by-elections for the Presidential and National Assembly votes on February 25 will not coincide with the gubernatorial elections scheduled for Saturday, March 18.
That was contained in a statement signed by committee spokesman Festus Okoye on Friday.
Clarifying rumors circulating on social media, Mr Okoye said the only elections to be held at the same time as the state elections would be the postponed Enugu East Senatorial District election and Edo’s Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben federal constituency election.
The killing of Labor candidate Oyibo Chukwu in the eastern Enugu election, days before the Feb. 25 election, prompted INEC to postpone the election.
Also, on Election Day, INEC announced the postponement of the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben House of Representatives elections due to the omission of the Labor Party logo from the election ballot papers.
An INEC spokesman said the commission would announce a later date for the by-election.
“We note that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has noted a news report that conveys the impression that the Commission intends to hold supplementary elections resulting from elections for the President and National Assembly, as well as elections for Governors and State Legislatures.
