According to state information company WAM, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s wealthiest monarchs, died on Friday.

“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs condoles the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic nation, and the world over the demise of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE,” in accordance with state information company WAM.

Sheikh Khalifa had been the president of the United Arab Emirates since his father died in 2004.

He was the UAE’s second president and Abu Dhabi’s sixteenth ruler, having been born in 1948.
