REC assures FCTA of INEC’s preparedness –

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) that it is ready to successfully conduct the 2023 General Election.

FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC, Alh. Yahaya Bello gave her assurance when she was a courtesy to the FCTA.

FCT REC Alh Yahaya Bello said that the INEC delegation’s participation in the FCTA was to inform the FCT Minister of how prepared FCT INEC is for the 2023 elections, and thanked the Minister for his support to the Commission so far.

He said; “We would like to thank you for all the arrangements and more importantly, FCT INEC under your leadership for your great support to the national INEC to ensure that the elections in FCT are conducted accurately.”

“One of the reasons we are here is to express our appreciation and gratitude to the Hon. Minister and the Home Office, especially as we conduct our ongoing voter registration campaign. We have received all the cooperation we need from the Hon. Minister With the Ministry when conducting the exercise, on the field and everything.”

“The Minister and the Home Office have not only generously allowed us to use the old parade grounds, but also have a responsibility to maintain law, order and security on the days we use the old parade grounds for our ongoing voter registration drive. Indeed, without that gesture , so many people would not be able to participate in the program and collect their PVCs.”

“As we expected, the poor performance of the BVAS led to a considerable improvement in the machine itself, as amply demonstrated in our other separate elections following the FCT.

“We went to Ondo, we went to Ekiti, we went to Anambra state, we went to Osun state. I would say that I went to all three states as a REC supporter and I Having seen the performance of BVAS compared to what happened during the FCT election, I want to assure you that this time, the presidential election, BVAS will do well in FCT,” he added.

In response, FCT Minister Malam Muhammad Musa Bello pledged the FCT administration’s support to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the successful conduct of the 2023 elections in the country’s capital.

The Minister, represented by Mr. Olusade Adesola, Permanent Secretary of FCTA, stated that the FCT Administration and FCT INEC enjoy a valuable working relationship and thanked REC for publicly acknowledging the support provided by the FCT Administration to the Commission.

He thanked the committee for the work it has done so far to prepare for the election, and said the FCT is also working to raise public awareness about the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He said: “I want to believe that FCT is one of the states with very low uncollected PVC, but we still believe there is a lot that can be done. We want to collect hundreds of cases of PVC so that no one will say it’s because I didn’t Get the PVC, that’s why I didn’t vote.

“That’s why we empowered the Special Assistant to the Hon. Minister to start a constituency-by-constituency campaign in the FCT to get people involved so everyone can collect their PVCs and get ready for the election,” he added.

The minister also said that REC’s statement that INEC is fully prepared for the elections is a confirmation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s pledge that he will leave Nigeria with a very credible and transparent election.

He also praised FCT INEC for its overall efforts to ensure the success of the 2023 elections, saying “We would like to thank you for all the arrangements and, more importantly, the great support of FCT INEC under your leadership. To ensure that the elections in the FCT are carried out accurately.”
