Osun Record First case of diphtheria, Adeleke pledges to ensure citizens’ safety. –

The Osun state government revealed on Monday that the state had recorded its first case of diphtheria in the state’s Eli Shadong local government area and assured its citizens to remain calm. All the necessary machinery is in place to ensure their lives are covered medically.

The governor’s spokesman, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, who spoke out in Osogbo, suggested a middle-aged man had contracted the disease and was isolated in a home. Appropriate medical care was received at an undisclosed hospital.

“The victim has been isolated and treated, and the state government has initiated contact tracing and is looking elsewhere across the state for others who may have contracted the disease,” he said.

“The state government has also started an awareness program targeting residents on how to prevent the disease.”

H further emphasized that the government has started training health workers to treat diphtheria, distributing prevention materials to hospitals, and raising awareness among residents of the state through radio songs and other projects.

According to him, “the government is also doing production and distribution of IEC materials. Training of health workers on case definition and diphtheria infection prevention and control. Production and broadcast of songs on prevention and training of health workers to collect diphtheria samples”.

However, Mallam Olawale also explained that “the state’s efforts to curb the spread of diphtheria in Osun State are community outreach during active case-finding and active case-finding, tracing cases in health facilities in affected LGAs. Search, contact tracing and follow-up of the index case.”

It will be recalled that the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) had earlier stated that it was monitoring the diphtheria situation in Yobe and Osun states, where it was detected.
