The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has imposed sanctions on 25 radio stations across the country for breaking broadcast codes during their coverage of the 2023 general election.
director general NBCBalarabe Ilelah, who broke the news to reporters at a news conference in Abuja, said the agency had also issued a final warning to 16 other radio stations.
Ilelah said the affected stations will face harsher penalties if they fail to comply with laws on election coverage during this weekend’s gubernatorial and state assembly elections.

“One of the stations was sanctioned for broadcasting the election results before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results in violation of Section 5.33 of the NBC Act,” he said.
“After the 24-hour blackout time imposed by NBC, 17 stations were sanctioned for broadcasting partisan content, while four stations were sanctioned for making divisive comments.”
