My Toy Story-obsessed three-year-old will be irritated by a trip to New York for darts, according to James Wade.

It’s true, Woody. My son will be irritated that I am traveling alone in the United States.

I’m writing from New York, where the US Masters is about to begin at the world-famous Madison Square Garden, home to some of sport’s most famous events, demonstrating the sport’s enormous popularity. In addition to hosting Ali and Frazier’s ‘fight of the century,’ it also saw Michael Jordan score a career-high 55 points against the Knicks in their own stadium. No offense to Michael Jordan, but I’m hoping JW hits more than 55 on his Garden debut!

I’ve previously played darts in America, at tournaments in Las Vegas and Atlanta, but this event will be massive, and it’ll be yet another sign of the game’s globalisation, which can only be good for players, sponsors, and fans.

My Toy Story dressing-up pal – aka my three-year-old son Arthur – will not be pleased. I’ve never vacationed in the United States, but a trip to Disney World in Florida is on our bucket list. He’ll have to make do with me as a mediocre Woody stand-in for the time being.

If my family is my first love, then engines and ‘tinkering’ with them is undoubtedly my second, and a childhood dream came true this week when I bought a 1995 Urban Tiger motorcycle. People are probably aware of my mechanic background (hence the reg plate on the back of my shirt), and anyone who knows me knows I thrive in a workshop.

I’ve been looking for one of these bikes for years (one with low mileage and in perfect condition), and it’s finally arrived. Despite the fact that I ride motorcycles, this is a collector’s item, and I will not be riding it on public roads.

I’m always working on a mechanical ‘project,’ and I adore the idea of restoring old Fords like Escorts and Sierras – I could talk about them for hours! I recently relocated and am currently putting together a new workshop. Once I’m set up, there will be engines and bodywork strewn about the place once more.

In the Premier League play-offs, who will emerge victorious? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I’m excited to be representing England alongside Michael Smith at the World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt later this month. I’ve competed in the competition before, with Phil Taylor and Dave Chisnall, and it’s a completely different experience.

I adore the idea of representing my country and despise the thought of disappointing someone else, so this competition makes me nervous. We may be the favorites based on world rankings, but I learned the hard way, when Phil and I lost in the first round, that being favorites does not guarantee victory.

We’ll give it our all to help England win the trophy, and I’ll be proud to wear the shirt again, as I always am.

Take care,

James Wade
