Mountain Lion Attack: Pico Canyon Park In Stevenson Ranch Closed After 7-year-old Boy Attacked By Cougar

Stevenson Ranch, CA (KABC) — A 7-year-old boy was attacked and injured by a mountain lion at Pico Canyon Park in Stevenson Ranch on Monday, according to officials.

The boy suffered injuries, described as non-life threatening, and the park has been temporarily closed by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is leading an investigation.

Capt. Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the boy was walking up the stairs when a mountain lion rushed from behind and bit him on the buttocks.

The boy’s father scared the mountain lion away.

The park will be closed until further notice due to the presence of “aggressive” mountain lions in the area, the Department of Parks and Recreation said in a news release.

DNA testing was done on the boy’s bite wound in an attempt to match it to a known cat. Meanwhile, authorities are looking for mountain lions.

AIR7 HD Over the area, authorities tried to lure mountain lions from the mountains with deer carcasses.

If a mountain lion was found and the DNA matched the boy’s bite, there was a good chance the animal would have been killed.

“Everything we do in every part of our mission is to better help wildlife and people coexist,” Foy said. “In this situation, wild animals start attacking, especially small children, and that’s a very difficult part of our job.”

Residents in the Stevenson Ranch area have reported seeing a cougar and worrying about their pets in recent weeks, but few thought it would hunt down humans.

“It still scares me because it could happen to me,” said Santa Clarita resident Francisco Salas, who frequently visits the trail above the park. “It could happen to anyone out there.”
