INEC to fix dates for supplementary elections after guber poll –

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted an outright false report that a by-election will be held on Saturday alongside the governorship and state assembly votes.

In a statement Friday from Festus Okoye, its national commissioner and chairman of its information and voter education committee, the committee said it would announce a new date for the by-election.

“For the sake of clarity, the by-election will be held on a date announced by the committee immediately following the Governor and State Legislative elections,” the statement read.

“However, this should not be confused with the committee earlier suspending and rescheduling the two National Assembly elections to be held alongside the governor and state assembly elections.

“The first is the Enugu East Senatorial District election, which was canceled under section 34(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 to allow Labor to conduct a new primary to replace its deceased candidate.

“The second is Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben federal constituency in Edo state because of problems with election ballots. These are not supplementary elections but primary elections that cannot be held earlier.

“The public is advised to disregard any reports suggesting that there will be a by-election tomorrow, Saturday 18 March 2023, in conjunction with the Governor and State Assembly elections.”
