I’m a beauty expert – here are six easy ways to get rid of shady fake tans at home without looking patchy.

PERFECTING a fake tan is a true art form, and many of us have struggled to achieve it.

Many of us end up with a tanned patch on our backs, dark knees and elbows, or horrible streaks that we don’t notice until we’re out of the house.

Worse, if your fake tan goes bad, getting rid of the discoloration can be a nightmare.

Here, tanning experts offer their best advice on how to get rid of a tan.

Use an exfoliating mitt

Apply the shower gel to an exfoliating mitt and gently rub your skin. This should get rid of your dead skin cells, as well as the top layer of tan.

The resident tanning expert at Skinny Tan, Claire Lambert, swears by an exfoliating mitt for removing unwanted color.

Go for a steam

Allow yourself to relax in the warm moist air of a steam room, spa, or gym near you. It softens your skin and allows you to exfoliate away your tan.

“Steam will help leave your skin super soft,” Claire Lambert explained to Good To Know. To achieve the best results, combine these methods with an exfoliating product.”

When you spend £10 today, you’ll receive a £20 bonus and 30 free spins.

Go for a swim

Swimming pool chlorine will hasten your fake tan’s facing process.

It dries out your skin, and the drier your skin is, the faster the tan peels away.

Slap on the lemon juice

Lemon juice is acidic, and natural acids can help exfoliate your skin.

“This is a great hack to get rid of any fake tan buildup or patches,” Claire said.

“To reveal a faded result, take a lemon, slice it in half, and massage the fresh lemon onto the area for a couple minutes.”

If you have sensitive skin, you should avoid this product because it is harsh and may irritate it.

Try baking soda

One of the many surprising and incredible applications of baking soda is in the removal of fake tans.

Make a paste out of baking soda and water and use it as a DIY scrub on your skin.

This can speed up cell turnover and fade your sallow tan.

“Simply combine the baking soda with water, lemon juice, or coconut oil to make a paste,” the expert advised.

“Apply directly to your skin, allowing it to oxygenate before exfoliating with a mitt to help prepare your skin for removing the tan.”

If you have sensitive skin, stay away from this product.

Use toothpaste

Last but not least, toothpaste can help you get rid of that pesky tan.

“Just apply whitening toothpaste directly to the skin where needed, and the sodium bicarbonate will help to remove any fake tan mistakes in about ten minutes,” Claire explained.

“All you have to do is wipe it away with a cloth or use an exfoliating mitt to help it along.”
