Ikpeazu, PDP, others react over death of PDP governorship candidate, Prof. Ikonne –

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Greg Ibe and other residents of Abia continue to react to the death of Professor Eleazar Uche Ikonne, the PDP Governor’s Candidate for the 2023 General Election.

In a press release signed by himself, Ikpeazu directed that all flags at the PDP Office in Abia State be flown at half-staff, while all campaigning activities at all levels of the party are suspended until Monday, January 30, 2023.

He urged all PDP leaders and members to remain calm “as we get through this difficult time together”.

According to Abia PDP Vice-Chairman/Acting State Advocacy Secretary, His Excellency Abraham Al-Amar said at a press conference on Wednesday night: “His death was very painful and came as he was recovering from his illness and showing good health. Signs and willingness to join us on the second leg of our ward-to-ward tour across 184 wards across 17 local government areas in Abia State.

“Following his passing, the State party’s top brass hereby suspend all campaigning for three days from tomorrow to show respect and love for the soul of our deceased compatriot.

The party called on members of the People’s Democratic Party to remain calm and firm, pending further instructions from the party leadership.

According to Mr. Director General. Longman Nwachukwu, Professor Gregory Ibe Campaign Organization, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Abia State Governor Candidate Professor Greg Ibe, “Deeply shocked by the tragic passing of Professor Uche Ikonne, the PDP Governor’s Standard Bearer.

He expressed his sympathy to the Abia State Government, especially Governor Ikpeazu and the PDP family on the death of the polymath and distinguished son of Abia.

He said Ikonne will be remembered for his many transformations in optometry across the country and for his contributions to the development of our dear nation, especially in the field of education.

In honor of the late gubernatorial candidate and academic colleague Ikonne, Professor Ibe has announced an immediate suspension of all his political activities, including the publication of campaign materials and the distribution of radio and television songs, until further notice.

APC’s candidate for governor, Senior Chief Ikechi Emenike, also expressed his sadness at the development, adding that he had received “shockingly bad news”.

He described the death of his gubernatorial contender as “a tragic development in the ongoing democratic process in Abia state”.

Equally lamenting, Abia ADC Chairman Don Norman noted: “A good man is gone.

“Good people don’t last long, it’s a mystery. Professor Uche Ikonne did leave this earth, but he never really left, because he still lives in our hearts and minds, and through us he continues to exist.

“Similarly, Bishop Dr. Emeka Nwankpa, the Unified Party candidate for governor of Abia State, called Professor Ikone a respectable brother and said his death was an insult to him. blow.

“There is nothing more saddening than the news of the passing of Professor Uche Ikonne. He was a worthy brother and a joint contender for the Governor’s seat.

“Although we are political opponents, we respect each other. When I become governor, I need him to live with me to build a new Abia state.”

Ikonne was a practicing optometrist until his death and held various positions at Abia State University, including Chancellor of Abba Abia State Polytechnic and Vice-Chancellor of Uturu Abia State University.
