Former Houston Texans president JAMEY Rootes has died at 55 after “battling mental health issues,” his wife confirmed.

Before retiring in 2021, Rutes served as NFL team president for more than two decades and has been a regular in the Houston community for decades.


Rutes’ wife, Melissa, confirmed the news of her husband’s death.

His wife, Melissa Wildgen Rootes, confirmed the news in a Facebook post Monday night, calling the family “heartbroken.”

“Our family is saddened to confirm that Jamie Rutes passed away on Sunday, August 21st, 2022 after battling mental health issues,” the post began.

“Jamie is a dedicated Houstonian who loves his city and has touched many lives through his professional, academic and philanthropic work.”


The family requested privacy at this time, noting that there will be a celebration of life in the future.

The post also includes the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for anyone thinking about suicide or going through a crisis.

Just a few days ago, it was announced that Rootes would be joining Rice University to lead its new Movement Analysis Hutchinson Leadership Program.

“His knowledge of the sports industry and his vast network of contacts has been invaluable to Rice,” said the university’s Clark Hapton-Storr.

In addition to working with Texans, Luters is a writer and adjunct professor at the University of Houston.

Rootes was also president and general manager of Columbus Crew and helped launch Major League Soccer.

After leaving the Texans, he briefly held leadership roles with the Houston Dynamo football team.

He attended Clemson University and played on its football team, winning two NCAA championships.

Rootes received an MBA from Indiana University.

Sports fans and professionals continued to share their respects after learning of Lutes’ pass.

Texans issued an official statement via Twitter expressing condolences.


“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of former Houston Texans president Jamie Rutes,” the Texans statement said.

“For two decades, Jamie has led our business operations with an unwavering commitment to Houston and the Houston Texans.

“We thank him for his strong leadership and his immeasurable contributions to our team.

“Our deepest condolences and condolences go out to Jamie’s wife Melissa and her two children during this extremely difficult time.”

Players and fans have also offered their condolences to him.

“Very saddened to hear about Jamey Rootes. He was a great man and always positive in the building. Praying for his family,” former Texans player Justin Reed wrote.

“Very sad news to hear of the passing of former Texans president Jamie Rutes. He was a very good man and was very committed to the team and philanthropy throughout the Houston area. Our thoughts go out to his family Deepest condolences. Rest in peace Jamie,” wrote NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

“My fondest memories of Jamey Rootes have nothing to do with football or Texans. He was a good guy and his love for his family shone through. I will miss him.
