Football: Spain’s La Liga unhappy with plans for expanded World Cup, World Club Cup

MADRID, March 16 (Xinhua) — The Spanish Football Federation (La Liga) issued a communiqué on Wednesday strongly criticizing FIFA’s decision on Tuesday to extend the 2026 World Cup to 104 matches and introduce a 32-team Club World Cup. Every four years from June 2025.

The decision on the 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams instead of the 32 that competed in Qatar last year, meaning 40 more matches will be added to the new World Cup, which will also last much longer than the month-long World Cup Qatar, Xinhua News Agency reported.

La Liga commented in a communiqué: “FIFA continues its inappropriate practice of unilaterally deciding the world football calendar, completely disregarding the importance of national and local championships and the football community as a whole.” Self-interests take precedence over the needs of member associations.

“Fifa has completely ignored the financial toll these decisions have had on leagues around the world. The federation has not been consulted on any of the changes proposed today, especially with regard to the new annual club competition.”
