Lenny Johnrose has died at the age of 52 after battling motor neurone disease for five years.

He spent his longest spell at Bury between 1993 and 1999, had a pivotal year at Swansea and is still beloved by Swans fans.

His goal against Hull City on the final day of the 2002-03 season was enough to keep the club safe in football and provide them with a springboard into the Premier League.

After his career ended in 2004, John Ross retrained and went on to teach elementary schools in the Northwest Territories.

He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2017, and the following year saw Swansea Legends and Burnley draw 10-7 in a charity match.

John Ross, a father of three who is married to wife Nadine, revealed his health deteriorated in February this year.

He told Wales Online: “My voice is close to my life and some of my words are really recognisable.

“Oh, I need to hold my head up to speak, which might explain why Nadine keeps taking my neck brace off.

“The saliva in my mouth has been somewhat controlled, although there is still enough to make a cup of tea!

“The legs are still strong, and I noticed a slight movement in the two fingers…that’s what it seems. So I’m still strong.”

Tributes have sprung up on social media following his tragic death.

Burnley wrote: “Our thoughts are with Ryan’s family and friends at this very sad time. You will always be red wine.”

Hartlepool, his other club, added: “Thanks to Len John Rose, we encourage fans to join us in our applause in the 52nd minute of tomorrow’s game against Tranmere Rovers. A great man inside and out. off the field”.

John Ross is a prominent advocate for motor neurone disease research and awareness.

He encouraged the football family to take part in the #IceFoot92 challenge and stand in a bucket of ice water for 92 seconds to raise money for the MND Association. The Len Johnrose Trust tweeted: “We are saddened to inform you that our leader, Len Johnrose, passed away this morning.

“Lon is a very proud husband and father. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”

A Swansea fan account added: “RIP Lenny, a true warrior and an amazing person. You were such a kind, kind and humble person. You will be sorely missed.”

“Thank you for the memories and for the inspiration. Our thoughts are with the entire John Ross family.”

One commented: “For most of you, Ryan is probably a football icon.

“But more importantly to me, he was the best teacher I’ve ever had, he really helped me to be who I was, he really helped me learn from right and wrong. My heart goes out to his family and My sincerest condolences to those who knew him.”
