On Monday, Italian police announced the arrest of the country’s most wanted mafia boss, Matteo Messina Denaro, who has been on the run for more than 30 years.

Denaro, of Castel Vetrano, a town near Trapani in southern Italy, has been charged by prosecutors with sole or joint responsibility for several other murders in the 1990s.
In 1993, he helped organize the kidnapping of 12-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo in an attempt to dissuade his father from giving evidence against the Mafia.
Prosecutors said the boy was held captive for two years before being strangled and his body dissolved in acid.
Police said that as of last September, Denaro was still able to issue orders over how the Mafia operated in the area around the western Sicilian city of Trapani, his regional stronghold, despite his long absence.
