Judge accepts plea of insanity for man who killed Florida couple ate their faces.
Austin Harouff, 25, will sent to a mental hospital for treatment rather than spend the rest of my life in prison.
It’s possible that one day doctors will decide he’s fit to be released into the public domain, but that’s unlikely.
A doctor described Haruf as “half a dog” during the 2016 random killings of John Stevens, 59, and his wife, Michelle Mishkom Stevens, 53, in Martin County. half man”.
Harrouff will now be held at a Martin County Jail before being safely transferred to a psychiatric facility.

The horrific nature of the crime drew national attention and fears it was carried out while Haruf was under the influence of bath salts and the synthetic drug flakka.
The defendant’s lawyers must prove that a mental breakdown caused insanity in the weeks before the killing. A toxicology report following Harrouff’s arrest found no signs of drugs.
Circuit Judge Sherwood Bauer accepted the plea deal agreed to by prosecutors and Harrouff’s defense team.

Haruf’s trial for the alleged killers of the Stevens was scheduled to begin Monday, but Bauer accepted the deal.
He will stand trial for two counts of murder and the attempted murder of a neighbor who tried to help.
Court TV reported that “the families of the murdered couple are very disturbed by the decision”, which took six years to reach as the trial was delayed by the Covid pandemic.
In a clearly outraged victim impact statement, Michelle’s sister, Cindy Mischon, directed her anger at Haruf and his parents.
“You should have done more. You failed miserably. My sister and brother-in-law died because you failed as a parent,” she said.

“I hate you, I hate you all,” she added before turning to Austin. “I really think you’re damned, Austin. Your family deserves to suffer like mine.”
Haruf was also in a coma for weeks after the attack after ingesting caustic chemicals believed to be found in the garage. Some reports suggest that chunks of human flesh were found in the killer’s teeth.

Police reportedly arrived at the scene in 2016 and found Harroff biting John in the face while he was nearly naked.
A bloody knife was found at the scene and police tried to restrain him. The stun gun didn’t work, and the perpetrator of “Gurg Gulu” was eventually brought down by police dogs.
Court documents say Haruf told officers to “help me, I ate bad stuff” before begging them to shoot him.

In a report from the Martin County State Attorney’s Office, defense expert Dr. Philip Resnick said the nature of the crime and how Haruf reacted when he was found suggested he was mentally ill at the time.
“Mr Haruf’s persistence in biting the male victim in the presence of the police despite threats of being shot, electrocuted and repeated kicks in the head suggests that Mr Haruf was mentally ill,” they said.
