President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of former Police Commissioner Solomon Arras (Rtd) as the new Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC)
In a letter to the Senate read by the President of the Senate at the Red House on Tuesday, President Ahmad Rawan said the appointment was made under the provisions of Article 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
If confirmed by the Senate, Arasse will replace the committee’s previous chairman, Mousliu Smith, as the substantive chairman of the police services committee.
In another development, President Buhari also retweeted two names to confirm that they are the resident election commissioners of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC).
The new appointments are Dr Mahmuda Isah from Kebbi State for renewal and Dr Mann Omobayi Alli from Ondo State for new appointment.
Another letter received by the Senate was to appoint five members of the Code of Conduct Bureau.
They are Representative Murtala A. Kankia from Katsina (Northwest); Representative Zephaniah Ishaku Bulus from Nasarawa (North Central) and Representative Farouq Umar from Yobe State (Northeast).
The others were represented by Abdulsalam Taofiq Olawale from Ondo State (South West) and Prof. Juwayriya Badamasiuy from Kogi State (North Central)
President Buhari therefore urged the Senate to consider and confirm all appointments in the usual expeditious manner.
However, the Senate has yet to take any legislative action on the various appointment letters, as senators rush to suspend the plenary session to join their parties’ campaigns for the upcoming general election.
