The All Progressive Congress Presidential Campaign Committee (APC, PCC) has called for the prosecution and disqualification of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Members of the media team of APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu made the call at a world press conference in Abuja on Monday.
Led by Special Counsel for Media, Communications and Public Affairs Dele Alake, the APC PCC noted that their request follows what is believed to be a revelation by whistleblower Michael Achimugu.
The whistleblower who swore under oath that he worked as a media adviser with a PDP presidential candidate, the vice-president under chief Olusegun Obasanjo, was allegedly involved in the so-called Financial fraud in a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) with Atiku Abubakar as Vice President.
The APC PCC told reporters the company was registered by the former vice president, using “trusted allies” as shareholders and directors. The intention is to transfer government contracts to these companies as “consultants,” which will then be paid funds and used to fund the PDP and its private business and household activities. “
Public affairs director and chief spokesman Festus Keyamo, who read a prepared press statement on behalf of his other colleagues, accused the former vice president and PDP presidential candidate of what he called “potentially breaking the law.”
The APC PCC has tasked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other anti-corruption agencies with prosecuting the PDP presidential candidate, citing the provisions of the Code of Conduct for Public Officials, the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition Act), 2022.
“We understand that law enforcement agencies may be reluctant to take action simply because it might create the perception that a presidential candidate is being persecuted.
“However, facts are sacred. The facts presented to the world so far clearly show that Atiku Abubakar has a case. In other cases, when such serious allegations arise in the campaign Law enforcement agencies take decisive action when they do.You may recall that in 2016, during the campaign for the U.S. presidency, the FBI began investigating allegations that Hillary Clinton misused private emails while she was Secretary of State. FACTS On Monday, the case was referred to the Department of Justice for possible prosecution, and the actual vote would not take place for several weeks. Although, she was later cleared, it is worth repeating that a sane and calm system would never allow such asides to prevent Or to distract them from launching the investigative process. This is the minimum requirement of a constitutional democracy. This is what we called on the authorities to do in the Alhaji Atiku Abubakar case.”
They also called for the disqualification of PDP presidential candidates from running in next month’s presidential election.
“In light of these very serious revelations, we call on Atiku Abubakar to immediately and unreservedly apologize to the Nigerian people and immediately withdraw from the presidential race while surrendering himself to law enforcement agencies.”
